Press Release 01.03.10

The battle to avoid relegation remains close in division one as it now looks like it will be two from four teams who will be biting the finger nails. St Georges ‘A’ have now slipped into the bottom two after losing 10-0 against leaders Phoenix. St Georges were bolstered by their number one Earl Sweeney playing his first match however he could not overcome his opponents which included Coventry number one Adrian Pilgrim.
Two of the other teams involved in the fight are Phoenix Britons and Nuneaton and they met this week. Nuneaton, despite playing with two men, came out 6-4 winners which mean they close the gap at the bottom of the table. The other side involved are Phoenix Ebos and the met Phoenix Angles who sit comfortable near the top end of the table. The Ebos will probably be happy with a 6-4 defeat as they pick up crucial points.
Copsewood ‘B’ and Phoenix Spice met in division two and the Spice narrowly won 6-4 however the man of the match award goes to Tony Nixon who won his three games for Copsewood.
Copsewood ‘C’ are currently sitting just above the relegation zone and they faced Phoenix Okimo who are third. A 5-5 score line resulted in which Steve Smith scored a maximum for Copsewood. The result moves them ahead of Phoenix Celts after they faced Rugby. A 9-1 defeat for the Celts means that they will be looking over their shoulders for the other results at the bottom.
The tightest division looks to be division three. Four teams are pushing for promotion and it is now Phoenix Francs who sit at the top after beating bottom team Copsewood ‘E’ 10-0.
Massey Ferguson ‘B’  are now just behind the top two after beating Phoenix Goths 7-3 with help from Rod Pearce who won his three and the doubles.
The team most likely to miss out are Phoenix Huns who drew 5-5 against Copsewood ‘G’ despite a Taran Dhillon hat trick.
Copsewood ‘F’ closed the gap on the teams in mid table after beating their club mates Copsewood ‘E’ 8-2.

There were several matches this week in division two in which the results could have had a big effect on the league tables both at the top and the bottom. Phoenix Okimo played two matches and came out with two wins, the first of which was an away win against Massey ‘A’. Jonny Pilgrim survived a scare against John Ludford, but managed to come through deuce in the fifth to help him to a maximum on the night and his team to a 7-3 score line. The second match was against bottom team JDC Fords however this position could well be a false one as JDC have 6 games in hand on their rivals. The match ended in a win for Okimo however Dave Smith won a maximum for Fords and helped his team win the doubles to limit the loss to 6-4.
Massey ‘A’ also played against Copsewood ‘D’ and this time they came out winners 8-2. The result means time is running out for Copsewood to get them selves out of the relegation zone.
Copsewood ‘C’ picked up three crucial points against promotion contenders Rugby which edges them away from the bottom two places, but for Rugby the seven points gained keeps up their momentum for the division one place next season.
Phoenix Spice came out winners 6-4 against Phoenix Celts which keeps both teams in mid table and Copsewood ‘A’ look to be moving clear at the top after winning 9-1 against Copsewood ‘B’.
Phoenix Francs moved to the top of the table in division three after a 5-5 draw against mid table Phoenix Goths. Massey ‘B’ and Phoenix Huns are both poised to strike at the top if the top two drop points after they both won 7-3 against Copsewood ‘F’ and JDC Sovereign respectively.
One match in division one which saw leaders Phoenix squeeze past Copsewood 6-4. Gokhan Aydoghu and Paul Calloway both won two for Copsewood, but it was Andy Woodcock who moves top of the averages after winning his three games for Phoenix.

The relegation battle in division one looks like it could go down to the final matches this season. There is now a gap between the bottom four sides and the rest of the division, but with St Georges ‘A’ having 3 games in hand over the other three sides they look as if they should have enough to pull clear. The three sides who are expected to be fighting to stay out of the bottom two all played this week and it was Nuneaton, who are currently lying in the bottom position, who picked up the most points after they narrowly lost 6-4 against Beechwood ‘A’ despite being without their number one player.
Phoenix Ebos who also sit it the drop zone faced a tough task against Phoenix and although there were a couple of close matches, they were the victims of a 10-0 defeat.
The team to move out of the relegation places are Phoenix Britons who faced Phoenix Angles. In a match which had six of the ten games go to five close sets, it is the Britons who may well feel hard done by after losing 8-2.
Copsewood ‘A’ look to be clear favourites for the division two title after yet another 10-0 win this time against relegation threatened Copsewood ‘D’.
Phoenix Celts are starting to pull clear of the relegation zone as they are now 12 points clear with two matches in hand after a draw against mid table Copsewood ‘B’ for whom Tony Nixon scored a maximum.
Copsewood ‘C’ picked up two points this week after losing to Phoenix Spice, but they will need to look over their shoulders as JDC Fords can still rise out of the drop zone with their six games in hand.
There were two 9-1 score lines in division three this week. Second placed Phoenix Francs defeated Copsewood ‘G’ and third placed Phoenix Huns beat Copsewood ‘E’.
Phoenix Goths picked up a good 7-3 win against Copsewood ‘F’ thanks to a treble from Jim Scott and two from Sarah Hudson.

This years Coventry Championships have just taken place and it is Ryan Stockham who came out the winner to retain the men’s singles title. Seeded number four, he was given a tough start by drawing Loz Sweeney in his group, but he managed to come through a hard fought battle with the improving youngster.
With all the seeds making it through to the quarter final stages, number one seed Mark Jackson faced his St. Georges club mate and doubles partner Earl Sweeney. After a close match, it was Mark who took his place in the semi final coming through in four sets. Andy Woodcock, seeded two, met Phil Paine in his last eight match and the first surprise of the event was to happen as Phil won in four sets to knock out the four time winner.
Ron Vose, who was seeded three, won in straight sets against Paul Calloway whilst in the final match of the round Ryan Stockham came from one set down and 10-6 down in the second set to beat Gokhan Aydogdu.
So the semi final line up was complete where Mark faced Ryan in the first semi and it was Ryan who found his best form of the day to knockout the top seed in four sets. In the other semi, Ron Vose made it through to the final after despatching of Phil Paine 3-0
For the second year running the final was between Ron and Ryan and it was Ron who started the strongest winning 11-9 in the first set. Ryan hit back strongly taking the next two sets 11-4 and 11-6, but Ron was not giving up and he levelled the match winning 11-9 in the fourth set.
The final set was a close game all the way to the end where at 9-9, Ryan won the final two points to claim his fifth singles title.
The women’s singles was only contested by three players and it was Cherry Matthews who won the round robin to retain her title.
The men’s doubles was won by Andy Woodcock and Ryan Stockham who justified their number one seeding by winning the title without dropping a set.
The mixed doubles was won by Mark Jackson and Charlotte Spencer after winning the round robin group on count back by just one set.
The juniors and the youth events were dominated by Loz Sweeney who retained all three titles after winning both the singles events and teaming up with Charlotte Spencer to win the Youth doubles.
Andy Woodcock won the veterans singles beating Ron Vose in straight sets whilst in the over 50’s event, Ron was once again in the final where he lost against Phil Paine.
Phil added another title after winning the Vets doubles with Earl Sweeney.
Congratulations go to all the winners of the graded events and the handicaps.

How the ranking list works

The ranking list works by calculating matches between individual players in the league competition or in cup competitions or tournaments. Matches in handicaps and doubles games are not included. The league rankings are also used in the calculation of handicaps and the seeding in tournaments and can be used to show the progress of individual players over a period of time.
Using the table below, the difference in points between the two players is calculated, and then depending on the result, the number of points is allocated to each individual.

If for example Player A (2500 points) plays Player B (2250 points), the difference between the 2 players is 250 points.
If player A beats player B, it is an expected win for player A and therefore he gains 5 points and it is an expected loss for player B and so he would loose 2 points.
If player B were to cause an upset and beat player A you would have to look in the unexpected columns to work out the points gained or lost.
Player B would gain 33 points as he has had an unexpected win and player A would loose 18 points as he has had an unexpected loss.
